Next month we will be sending home play parts for our annual 1st Grade Fairy Tale Plays. We will be practicing the whole month of April on these play performances. We will have a special performance for our parents and families on May 8th. We would like for all parents to be available for these performances. We would like to ask whether we should perform in the morning or in the afternoon. Which would be a better time for you? Please email me to let me know which time of the day you prefer. Field Trip Update
Please check the Field Trip tab on the blog for more info about our Landmark Park field trip on February 23. We will be going to Chuck E. Cheese afterwards. The cost is $6 which includes pizza, drink, and tokens. NO EXTRA MONEY is allowed for extra tokens.

Jumprope for Heart
Jumprope for Heart papers were sent home last week. Your child should send any money they collect along with the paper that you have signed saying they can jump to school by February 16th.

Parents: No one is to receive Valentine flowers, stuffed animal, etc. from parents, grandparents, etc. at school on Valentine Day. Have them sent to your homes. We will still exchange our valentines in the classrooms and have our party.

Reading Test
The Reading Test 7 did not turn out as well as I thought they should have. I sent home a study guide for them to study on Monday night. Some studied and some did not. I have decided to send worksheets home for homework over the weekend. On Monday I will give other worksheets as a grade. I will average the 1st test and the 2nd worksheets test together to get your child's final grade. This is the 2nd time I have decided to give a test for a 2nd time due to the grades. I will not be doing this again. Please remind your child to study the study guides that I send home for these tests. I make the study guides based exactly off of the tests.

K4 and K5 Enrollment
All current families who have students entering K4 or K5 for the 2011-2012 school year are encouraged to register prior to February 17th. After this date, enrollment for new families will be opened. Applications are available in the main office or on the school website under the Admissions tab. Please note that current families enrolled in the school are not required to pay any fees at the time the new K4/K5 student application is submitted.

Lunch Money
Parents, please write down what your child needs to order. It is taking them so long just to pick out what they want to eat that they don't have time to eat all their food.

Landmark Park Field Trip
I have enough drivers for our field trip to Landmark Park on Feb. 23. The drivers are: Carol Spurlock, Erica Garrott, Nancy Harrell, Dana Thrash and Melissa Bradford. Also, the money for the field trip was due yesterday. I need the $6 for your child and if you are a parent attending please by today (Tuesday, February 7).

Measurement Test
We did not do well on our Measurement Test yesterday. I will give the test again on Monday and take the better of the two grades. Everyone will retake the test because everyone has the chance to better their score. I had a few As and Bs but I also had quite a few lower grades. Please study the study guide over the weekend.

Flat Stanley
The Flat Stanley project is an activity that is lots of fun for your child and involves many aspects of the curriculum. It involves many skills: listening, writing, language, reading, social studies, geography, and map skills. Information will be sent home with your child on Monday asking for addresses of 3 people or families who we will be sending Flat Stanley to go and visit. We want to see Flat Stanley travel throughout the world so try to think of people who live in different states or countries. We will also be asking for envelopes and stamps to mail Stanley in. This is going to be a fun project!

Valentine's Day Party

Landmark Park

SGA Can Food Drive
The SGA began their Can Food Drive on Monday, Jan. 9th. Please bring cans and other non-perishable food items to school to donate to the local food banks. Classes in grades K4-6 and 7-12 who bring the most non-perishable food items will win lunch! Last year we contributed around 2,700 cans, so let's try to top that!

Annual Deer Hunt
The annual deer hunt will be January 13-15, 2012. This is the largest fund raiser for our school. We are asking for each family to send $5.00 or a homemade dessert. The desserts need to be delivered to the school office by 8 a.m. on Friday the 13th. If you choose to send money, please send it in an envelope labeled “deer hunt”. Thank you for helping to make this a successful fund raiser!

The 100th Day of School is this month and we celebrate this day by doing all things 100. We usually order some really cool things to help us celebrate this day. Polar Express Day
Polar Express Day is Wednesday, December 14th. The cost is $2. I wanted to wait to ask for Polar Express money since we have been asking for money for our field trips lately. Half Days Before Christmas
We are doing a new thing this year right before Christmas. Instead of having just one half day on the last day of school before Christmas Break, we are having two half days. We will be getting out of school on December 15th and 16th at 12:00 (11:40 for early birds). There will not be lunch offered or afterschool on those days as well. We will not be doing anything on Friday. Your child may come if they want to but we will just be watching a movie or playing board games. Teachers will be here though.

Christmas Party Gift
We will be having our Christmas Party on the Thursday before Christmas Break, it is also a half day that day. During our party we like to open presents, it's kind of like Secret Santa. We don't draw names because somehow everyone always finds out who their person is. What we do instead is we draw names on the day of the party so it is a surprise to everyone. Your child has been told to pick out a gift that they would want and on the party we hand them out as we draw names. This way no one knows who will get their gift until the day of. Have your child pick a gift (girl gift is your child is a girl, boy gift if your child is a boy) wrap it up and make sure your child's name is on it so we know who the gift is from. We will have a tree to set the gifts under. PLEASE BRING THE GIFTS BY WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14.

Fun Friday Show-and-Tell

We will be having show-and-tell for our Fun Friday this week. Your child may bring anything except a live animal to show us and tell us about it.

Auburn and Alabama Day

We will be celebrating the Iron Bowl early at school since the game will be happening while we are on break. On Friday your child can wear their favorite school shirts, jerseys, cheer uniforms, or colors. If your team isn't the Auburn Tigers or the Alabama Crimson Tide, you may wear whichever school you are a fan for. I have told the kids that they do not have to dress up and if they don't have anything to wear they don't have to go out and buy anything.

Veggie Pick-Up

If you sold veggies and need to pick up your order, they will be delivered Thursday, Nov.17.

Patriot Marketplace

The Patriot Marketplace will be Dec. 1 and 2 this year. Each year we ask each grade to make themed baskets to sell at the marketplace. 1st grade's theme is "Pamper Yourself" which would be items such as bath wash, shampoos, soaps, smelling salts, lotions, body spray, fingernail things, and so on. If you wish to put a basket together, please have it ready and turned in to the school by Nov. 29 (the Tuesday we get back from Thanksgiving).

Edline
Edline gives you as parents access to see your child's grades whenever you wish. I update grades for the previous week every Monday. You must have an activated account in order to view these grades. Your activation codes were sent home in your child's report card folder. Edline sends one activation code per family so only one of your children had the code in their report card. Also this is a communication device the school will be using in place of JOTT which was used last year. I sent home a note about Edline as far as grades and mass email availability last week. On this note it said the deadline for parents sign and return this note is tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 9th. I still lack some notes. Please sign and return these notes to me tomorrow. Thanks.

Cookie Dough Sales
Cookie Dough Sales were sent home last week. Sales will go through Nov. 15th. The class with most sales in K4-4th will recieve a pizza party.

We had such a good time at the hospital today. We got to see a firetruck, helicopter land and take off, and the all the special rooms and equipment inside the hospital. We had such a great time that we almost didn't get to finish our Show-and-Tell. We did but I did not get to send home the AR goals for this week or the Spelling words for next week. I like to send home the Spelling words early when we have short weeks. I will send home the AR goals on Monday but keep in mind that these papers were made after AR tests on Friday. Fall Festival
I still didn’t have enough parents to work the bowling booth for time slot so we decided to drop bowling and team up with the other 1st grade and do the Plinko booth. When we put the parents signed up from both classes together we have enough to run the booth. Bowling was a difficult booth to run which is why we needed so many volunteers. Everyone will stay at their same time they signed up for, we just will be working with the other 1st grade parents too.

Clothes for Grandparents' Day
Please wear normal clothes to school tomorrow and bring something nice to change into for Grandparents' Day. I don't want their nice clothes to get sweaty or for them to drop food on them so I will give them a chance to change tomorrow before the performance.

Red Ribbon Week
October 24-28 is Red Ribbon Week. There will be an assembly on Monday, October 24. The SGA is encouraging PLAS students to show their contempt for drug use by dressing up during the week. Prizes will be awarded to classes with the most participation. Dress is as follows:
Monday- Be RED-Y WHEN ASKED! Wear red this day.
Tuesday- DON'T BE MIXED UP WITH DRUGS! Wear mismatched clothing.
Wednesday- BE TWICE AS STRONG! Dress up like twins, triplets, etc. (You may wear jeans and our field trip t-shirt because many people will be wearing that and so they will be matching.)
Thursday- DON'T BE SCARED TO TAKE A STAND! Wear Halloween costume.
Friday- BE COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR DECISION! Wear pajamas.

Grandparents' Day is 10/21/11
PLA Grandparents' Day will be Friday, October 21 at 1:30 in the Cafetorium. The 1:30 time is new because we still might need more time to prepare for Grandparents' Day as well as to finish our lessons. I sent home lines that your child needs to memorize by the time we get back from Fall Break. Each child will have 2 lines to memorize for them to say by themselves on stage. The last two lines everyone will say together. We will be saying this poem along with Mrs. Keesee's class.

Muffins with Mom!
I sent home a flyer yesterday about Muffins with Mom. It will be Thursday morning, September 22, 2011 7:00am - 8:00am in the PLAS Cafateria.

Muffins with Mom is a "come and go" event for students k4 - 4th grade and their Mommies. The cost is $5 per family and will be collected at the door. All Mommies are encouraged to come have a muffin and juice with your child(ren) before going to work or starting the rest of your day.
Please come have a quick muffin with your child while also supporting the PTO.

Hair Feathers
On Thursday, September 22, the softball team will be selling hair feathers at the school. There will be someone here to attach the feathers when purchased. Cost is $15. They would like a head count of how many children want feathers ahead of time. If your child is interested, please let me know.

Dress for Homecoming Week
The dress-up schedule for next week's Homecoming Week will be:
Monday: dress up as kings and queens (England)
Tuesday: dress up as ninjas or karate (Japan)
Wednesday: dress up as pirates (Tortuga)
Thursday: wear Homecoming shirt (ordered earlier) or wear red, white, and blue/Pike shirts
Friday: dress up as firemen and policemen (1st grade theme: New York)

Dress up days—Please do not bring swords of any kind for ninja and pirate days.

Homecoming Pep Rally Schedule
On Friday we will have an altered schedule due to Homecoming. There will be a wagon parade where parents can line up to take pictures and we will walk to the football field for the pep rally. The schedule is:

10:00-10:30 - Snack
10:30 - Line up with wagons in front of the High School building

Kisses for a Quarter
The SGA will be selling kisses for a quarter this week. If your child buys a kiss, they will have a chance to kiss a football player or cheerleader on Friday at the pep rally.

All About Me
This week we will be starting All About Me. I have been on the board up until now. I will draw a name every Monday from a bag and then send home a form that asks questions all about the child. They will need to fill out the form and find pictures to hang on the board. They should bring back the pictures with the form on Friday and I will hang them on the board after school on Friday. This week's All About Me is Sarah Windham.

Yearbook Pictures
K4-4th grade school day pictures will be taken tomorrow, September 13. Pictures are only the chest up so please still have your child wear tennis shoes for P.E. I'm not sure if we will be able to take pictures before or after P.E.

Landmark Park Field Trip
Our Landmark Park field trip money was due today, Monday September 12. The cost per person is $7 (children and adults). Each of the three drivers needs to send $7 as well (drivers: Carrie Lee Gardner, Jodie Singleton, and Dana Thrash).We have to send the money in a few weeks in advance.

Homecoming Week
Homecoming week is next week, Sep. 19-23. Every year we dress up based on a theme and decorate a wagon. This year's theme is "Around the World" and the 1st grade has chosen the state New York. With the 10 year anniversary of 9-11 being yesterday, we thought we would pay tribute to New York in that way. We will be decorating our wagon like the Twin Towers and be asking the children to dress up as firemen and policemen. We will start decorating that wagon this week. If you have a wagon we could borrow, please let me know.

The dress-up schedule for next week's Homecoming Week will be:
Monday: dress up as kings and queens (England)
Tuesday: dress up as ninjas or karate (Japan)
Wednesday: dress up as pirates (Tortuga)
Thursday: wear Homecoming shirt (ordered earlier) or wear red, white, and blue/Pike shirts
Friday: dress up as firemen and policemen (1st grade theme: New York)

Show and Tell
For our Fun Friday this week we will be having Show and Tell. Your child may bring anything they would like to that is NOT living. (We will have a special Show and Tell called Pet Day at the end of the year.) I suggest that anything that is very valuable or breakable should not be brought to school.

Tissues
I only received a few boxes of tissues this year and we are almost out already! This week has been full of sniffles. We are using germ-x, Clorox wipes, and Lysol to try and keep these sniffles to a minimum, but this week it didn't stop the noses from running. If you would please send a box of tissues to school with your child, I would greatly appreciate it.

PTO Discount Cards

This year the PTO's goal is for every family to try and sell 10 cards. This is a very big fundraiser for the PTO and they have worked very hard to get 50 merchants throughout the community to participate in giving discounts. The PTO will be giving a pizza party to the class with the most cards sold (K4-5, 6-8, and 9-12).

I didn't send home the Student Handbook on accident. It has 4 pages that you need to sign and send back to school. I will send it home tomorrow.

Please make sure to read and sign the papers that were sent home today and return them tomorrow in your child's take-home folder.

Welcome to Mrs. Blackwell's 1st grade!

The first day of school begins Monday, August 8 at 8:00 and will end at 2:40/3:00. Between the hours of 8:00 and 9:00, parents may accompany their child to the classroom to find out which teacher he/she has been assigned and bring supplies.

If you would like to purchase a field trip t-shirt this year, the cost is $15. Forms will be sent home at a later date.

All forms/information sheets will be sent home for you on Monday to fill out. Please return these by Friday, August 12. Don't forget the Liability Release Form must be notarized.

We will have a party volunteer sign up sheet in the room Monday morning for each party we will be having this year.

All information will be posted on my blog or the Pike Lib announcement section. Please make sure to check daily for updates.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU YOU HAVE YOUR CHILD'S NAME IN YOUR WINDOW WHEN YOU COME TO PICK THEM UP. WE DON'T KNOW CARS AND A NAME IN THE WINDOW WILL MAKE TRAFFIC FLOW GO QUICKER.
